Hurricane Season is Here—Is Your Home Protected from Flooding?

June is the start of the six-month Atlantic hurricane season, and forecasters predict it will be more active than normal. According to Colorado State University, 17 named tropical storms are expected to develop, with nine reaching hurricane strength, both above the average of the last three decades.

Residents in coastal states are understandably most vulnerable to these storms’ heavy winds, rain, and storm surges. But some of the most severe flooding from hurricanes and tropical storms happens far inland—often hundreds of miles from the coast.

Inland states at risk of hurricane-driven flooding include North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. In fact, more than 40% of flood insurance claims come from areas that are not considered high-risk flood areas. Heavy rain, melting snow, block storm drains, or nearby construction can all lead to localized flooding.

Flood insurance can give you financial protection and peace of mind, no matter where you live.

Flood Protection is Available and Affordable

While flooding is not covered by regular homeowners policies, flood insurance is widely available.

It provides valuable protection against losses to your home and personal property, including:

Home Coverage

• Home and foundation

• Electrical and plumbing systems

• Air conditioning, furnaces, and water heaters

• Kitchen appliances

• Flooring

• Bookcases and cabinets

• Debris removal

Personal Property Coverage

• Clothing, furniture, and electronic equipment

• Window coverings and window AC units

• Portable microwaves and dishwashers

• Carpets not covered by your building policy

• Dishwasher, washer, dryer, and microwave ovens

• Freezer and food spoilage

• Up to $2,500 in art, jewelry, and furs

Keep in mind that there is typically a waiting period before coverage can take effect, so the sooner you contact a Westwood agent to assess your risk, the sooner you can have peace of mind knowing your home and personal property are protected.

Whether you’re required to carry it, or you simply want the extra protection, it’s worth having a conversation.
