Key Findings
There’s a trend toward people moving to the South. Here are some additional statistics about moving trends from early 2024 data:
- South Carolina continues to dominate searches, with a consistent rate of two times more interest for moves into the state than out.
- States seeing the highest net volume of searches for moves in are North Carolina, Florida, Texas, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
- Top cities people are moving to so far in 2024 include Ocala, Florida; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Asheville, North Carolina; Wilmington, North Carolina; and Greenville, South Carolina.
- On the flip side, California’s major cities like San Diego, San Francisco, and Los Angeles are seeing way more people move out than move in.
Reasons for These Moving Trends
What’s the attraction to these locations? One of the biggest factors is that these states have a lower cost of living. As prices for necessities like food and gas keep rising, these areas provide a bit of relief when compared to others. This is reflected in the results as South Carolina, the most popular destination, is indexed at a 97.6 for cost of living, under the U.S. average of 100.
Another reason these states are topping the list is their steady climate. The mild weather in the South allows people to take part in recreational activities like boating, golfing, and hiking year-round. With the increase in remote work options, people have more flexibility to choose where they want to live.
